Wrinkle Relaxers and Fillers Q&A

What are Botox and fillers?

Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA) is the brand name for an injectable neurotoxin used in cosmetic treatments to block nerve signals to facial muscles and other muscles. Though this treatment is considered very safe and is used widely, it originates from the same compound produced by bacteria that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning.

When a muscle is directly injected with Botox, the targeted muscle becomes temporarily paralyzed and no longer receives nerve messages telling it to contract in response to commonly expressed emotions. Instead, the surrounding skin relaxes, temporarily appearing smoother and softer.

Dermal fillers are used to smooth wrinkles and plump up hollowed areas of the face, such as in the cheeks, where facial volume has been lost during aging.

Which is better, Botox or dermal fillers?

Botox is best for addressing dynamic lines on the face, whereas fillers are best for managing folds on the face and treating volume loss. Fillers can also be used to smooth scars and plump lips.

If you’re considering an injectable cosmetic treatment, the Sapphire Dermatology team can work with you to determine if you would benefit from Botox, a dermal filler, or both in order to meet your aesthetic goals.

The team at Sapphire Dermatology recognizes that these treatments are not one-size-fits-all. Cosmetic injectables should be administered by a skilled dermatologist to safely and effectively enhance your appearance.

Do you offer other injectables in addition to Botox and fillers?

Some of the injectables offered at Sapphire Dermatology include:

  • Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA)
  • Juvederm®
  • Restylane®
  • Kybella®
  • Sculptra®
  • Wrinkle relaxers
  • Dermal fillers

Dr. Kunal Angra is also experienced in performing injectable treatments for body augmentation. In addition to being skilled in botox and fillers, Dr. Kunal Angra is formally trained through the ASDS Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship. He specializes in injectable products and non-invasive body contouring, skin tightening, and laser rejuvenation procedures.
